The Talmud Torah was founded in the 1860's in Lithuania by Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv, known as the “Alter of Kelm”. His aim was to strengthen the study of Mussar, meaning Jewish ethics, spiritual discipline and self-improvement. In June, 1941, the entire faculty and student body were murdered by the Nazis. “The Alter’s” contribution to what became known as the “Mussar Movement” continues until today.
